Soccer Referees, Coaches, and Parents -- Northern California -- San Francisco Peninsula.
1. Tryouts Announcement Page
If you are looking for a Fall team to join, you might be surprised that many competitive teams in the "youngers" category are scheduling tryouts in the early months of 2003. (The "olders" will be playing high school soccer for a month or so more.) You'll find a listing of January and February team tryouts from mid-peninsula competitive soccer clubs here. This page also includes instructions on getting your own tryouts listed.
2. SAYSO Gryphons Tryouts
Tryouts for U9 and U10 (Fall 2003 designations) boys and girls will be held by the San Andreas Youth Soccer Organization on February 9, February 23, March 9, and March 23 at Central Elementary School in Belmont from 12:00 till 2:00. For more information, call (650) 593-5161. More information is available here.
3. Four Upcoming Referee Certification Courses
Several 18-hour USSF grade-8 referee courses are being held on the Peninsula - one in Portola Valley (on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting January 21) and another in East Menlo Park (two consecutive Friday-Saturday sessions starting February 7. For more information, go here.
The South San Jose/West Valley Soccer League is offering a referee certification course on the weekend of February 7-9 (Friday-Sunday). The class will be held at Castro Middle School. The De Anza Youth Soccer League is offering a referee certification course starting on the evening of Monday February 17 and running through the following Saturday. Contact Mark Maulhardt at firstname.lastname@example.org.
4. Coaching License Certification Courses
There are very few (none on the Peninsula) coaching licensing courses being given during this time of year.
5. CYSA's AGM and Equipment Show
The CYSA Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 1 and 2, at the Convention Center in Sacramento. All soccer coaches and referees, regardless of affiliating organizations, should find Saturday's free Equipment Show and clinics/workshops valuable. Sunday is essentially reserved for voting on proposals for new and changed CYSA rules and regulations. For more information, go here.
6. "Hot Shots" Spring Soccer League
The U9/U10 (Fall 2003 designations) "Hot Shots" Spring Soccer League is open to boys and girls soccer teams (CYSA, AYSO, PAL, Boys and Girls Club, and indoor teams) as well as individual players on the Peninsula. There are no residency limitations. Third-party insurance is provided, and teams do not retain their original affiliations. If you are a parent or a coach with players in the appropriate age group (i.e., born on or after August 1, 1993), more information is available here.
7. Directions to Fields
SAYSO continues to compile directions to soccer fields as they are submitted by coaches. Another hundred (or so) listings were added in December, and the list is beginning to stabilize. Remaining are about a hundred more sets of directions in map format that need to be put into text format. You are welcome to contribute to the list or just print out a copy and keep it in your glove box.
